How To: Decorate Your Kitchen
First of all, it’s your kitchen. By all means take advice on decorating (or else I wouldn’t need to write this), but what I aim to humbly show you in this blog is that you already have the knowledge necessary to decorate well. Here are a couple of suggestions to get you started.
1.Identify your lifestyle needs
Take a moment to figure out how you want your kitchen to make you feel. Is your lifestyle such that you want your kitchen to be a quiet place that will sooth after a long, hectic day or is it the room that will be expected to serve as a dynamic hub for entertaining? Write a job description for your kitchen. Who will use the kitchen? Just you, or a busy, rambunctious family? Do you cook often or is your kitchen a “snack kitchen?” Do you work, study, or do household tasks in your kitchen? And so on. I could write a entire blog with questions for you to answer, but ultimately you know best what your dream kitchen does and looks like.
2. Identify your own style preferences What styles (in clothes, interior decorating, art etc) appeal to you? Perhaps you are empowered and energized by a modern streamlined look. On the other hand, you may be inspired and cheered by an eclectic objects and colors or vintage looks.
3. Make a design board/ notebook
As you start planning your new kitchen (whether it’s a total renovation or a simple redecorating project) you will see ideas you like in pictures or articles. Keeping these together is a great way to get a consistent look in the room. Rather than ending up lots of bits and pieces that are individually great but incoherent together, you’ll be able to imagine how everything will come together and adjust your ideas as needed. Some designers like to put up a corkboard where they can collect al their ideas. Others prefer a notebook that can come with on shopping trips. If you’re planning at work (Don’t worry, I won’t tell.) the website pinterest.comis a fun way to keep track of online finds.

4. Use professionals as resources Ask a kitchen professional what kitchen decorating tips they have for you. They may have some favorite websites or blogs where you can get some inspiration. They will also be knowledgeable about what does and doesn’t work in a kitchen. Learn from their other customers’ mistakes.
Hopefully, now you a feel a little more prepared to tackle your kitchen redecorating project. Email us here at Granite Grannies if you have any questions or need help starting your project.
