The Granite Grannies Story

It all started when Lori Hethmon's kitchen update got a bit out of hand.

Lori was born and raised in Wisconsin in a family of custom homebuilders. Her father Carl Hoffmann was a well respected architect and builder in the greater Milwaukee area. She was one of those girls who would have given anything to switch home-ec classes for shop. As a young college grad, she put her knowledge of luxury home design to work as a real estate agent in Beverly Hills, California. At the end of the 90's, after a few years traveling the world and getting married, Lori and her husband settled in Prince George's County, Maryland (although they would still manage to travel extensively, even living abroad in twice in the Middle East with their young kids in tow).

After taking a few years off work to raise and homeschool her three children (who all work for the family business now that they are grown), Lori started work as a rep for a high end linen design firm. She got to travel all over the East Coast visiting some of the most beautiful houses in the country. That's when she fell in love with natural stone countertops.

In 2001, Lori and her husband purchased a historic 19th century farmhouse in Upper Marlboro, MD. Lori set to work updating and decorating every room in the house (no small undertaking). When it came time to renovate the kitchen, she was determined to figure out a way to get beautiful, unique granite on a small budget. That's when she met "Granny," a successful business woman who gave her the tools and contacts to directly import sea-containers of pre-cut slabs of unique granite from abroad. Lori started bringing in the lots one at a time in 2004 and selling the pieces from her historic bank barn on the weekends (still while homeschooling during the week) and referring her clients to nearby fabrication shops for installation services.

It wasn't long before she became frustrated with the poor service and lack of craftsmanship her clients got from other fabricators. So, being the go-getter she is, Lori bought a warehouse and equipment, hired the best installers available, and started offering installation in addition to full slabs of unique and exotic granite. The rest is history. We just passed our ten year anniversary- ten years of outstanding service to our friend and neighbors in Maryland, D.C., and Virginia. We hope you will become a part of the next ten years of Granite Grannies history.
